Paul Auster on Nathaniel Hawthorne

The American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the classics in American literature, known for novels such as The Scarlet Letter. But he also left private writings, in which Paul Auster has taken a keen interest. In them, Hawthorne writes candidly in journal form about the challenges in balancing the roles of father and writer, from a time he had sole care of his five year old son Julian. Here, he did something no writer had tried before him, Auster says. Long before our Knausgård, Hawthorne gives the reader a glimpse into his thoughts on fatherhood – in the 1850s.

In The House of Literature’s series «Literary guiding stars», international writers talk about a writer they admire. This time, Paul Auster will make us better aquainted with Hawthorne’s writing.

The lecture will be held in English.
