Driving Democracy from Within

Democracy cannot be exported, imported or introduced by force. Democracy has to develop from the inside and defined in the particular context of the country of region in question. But can the international community in a meaningful way support these processes?

About the participants:

Ms. Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi (South Africa) joined UNDP as the Director for Democratic Governance in January 2009. She has served her Government for over 14 years in various positions, most recently as Minister for Public Service and Administration and Member of the South African Parliament. Prior to this, she was Minister of Welfare and Population Development.

Ms. Liv Tørres (PhD) is a political scientist whose research has focused on democracy and labour issues. She has worked extensively with South Africa through senior positions in Norwegian People’s Aid and The Norwegian Institute for Labour and Social Research (FAFO).
