What is the role of sovereignty in environmental governance and peacebuilding? John-Andrew McNeish, Professor of Global Development Studies at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) launches a book clarifying the key persisting role of sovereignty in the everyday governance of the environment and peacebuilding in Latin America. Drawing on examples from fieldwork carried out in Bolivia, Guatemala, and Colombia over the last twenty years, McNeish reveals how the idea of sovereignty is reworked and repurposed in current debates and conflicts between states, corporations, peasants, and indigenous peoples regarding land and resources.

Joining him to discuss and debate these issues in his new book are Bjørn Bertelsen, Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Bergen and Executive Director of the Global Research Programme on Inequality (GRIP); Mariel Aguilar Stølen, Professor at the Centre for Development and the Environment, University of Oslo and Andrei Marin, Associate Professor at the Department of International Environment and Development Studies at the Norwegian University of Studies.

Opportunity will also be given to the audience to ask questions in plenum. A limited number of the book will be on sale at the event. Please also see: https://www.berghahnbooks.com/title/McNeishSovereign
