Climate change, sex change, racism and time travel. These are som of the themes treated with great ease in the books of Dominican writer Rita Indiana. Her literary style is confident, witty and deeply political. Aside from her writing, she is also a performance artist and musician, and has, among other things, made music for the TV show Orange Is The New Black.

Two of her books are available in Norwegian: Tentacle (La Mucama de Omicunlé) and Papi, both translated into Norwegian by Signe Prøis. For the first one, Indiana received the prestigious 2017 Grand Prix Littéraire of the Association of Caribbean Writers as the first ever SPanish writer. In this novel, Indiana creates a dystopia in a future Caribbean characterized by political upheaval and climate change.

Papi is an autobiographical novel about a young girl’s strong longing for a father who will come home soon, and the harsh reality check to these dream scenarios when the father finally takes the trip from the US to Santo Domingo to visit.

At the House of Literature, Indiana will meet editor of the literary magazine Vinduet, Maria Horvei, in conversation.

The event will be in English.

Rita Indiana skulle egentlig ha besøkt Litteraturhuset under karibiske og mellomamerikanske dager våren 2018, men måtte avlyse i siste liten. Det er derfor en stor glede at hun tar turen nå.
