Ireland and Norway’s cultures of memory
In Ireland, the “Decade of Centenaries” started in 2013 and is now coming to a close in 2023 reflecting on 100 years since the events that impacted on the foundation of the Irish State and global changes since then.
To mark the end of this period of commemoration, the Embassy of Ireland is taking this opportunity to reflect on this subject, both in Norway and Ireland. What do these cultures of remembrance say about how we commemorate our pasts? Do these commemorations influence how we see our shared past?
Join us as we tackle these issues with Anne Dolan, Associate Professor in Modern Irish History at Trinity College Dublin, and Charlotte Aslesen, Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Oslo, as they explore how Norway and Ireland both commemorate their paths to national independence. The panel will be moderated by Ulrike Spring, Professor of Modern European History at the University of Oslo.
