SIFA aims to shed light on 2024 as an election year. A total of 64 countries worldwide are scheduled to hold elections - this accounts for 49% of the world's population. In this regard, we invite you to "The Election Year 2024" at Litteraturhuset, where we will explore the global and regional democratic trends facing the world today. We will hold a lecture and a following panel discussion exploring various themes: the US election, the rise of the right-wing and anti-democratic tendencies in Europe, the rise of Asia-great power politics and non-democratic tendencies in several African countries.

Our esteemed panel consists of:

Eirik Bergesen - Eirik Bergesen is a political commentator, presenter and former diplomat. He has been in the Norwegian foreign service for 10 years, worked with political satire at NRK and is currently a podcast-host alongside international law-expert Sofie Haugestøl where they discuss everyday news, by putting them in a broader political perspective, «det store bildet».

Samba Dialimpa Badji - PhD candidate at OsloMet in Journalism and Media Studies. He holds a Masters Degree in Defense Peace and Security and a BA in journalism. Before joining the DD-MAC project, Samba worked for Africa Check, a fact-checking organization working on tackling misinformation and promoting media literacy in Africa. Samba's research focuses on the role of digital media in the armed conflicts in Ethiopia and Mali.

Sunniva Engh - Associate professor at the University of Oslo. Engh holds a DPhil in Modern History from the University of Oxford (2006), with the dissertation 'Population Control in the 20th Century: Scandinavian Aid to the Indian Family Planning Programme'. She also holds an MPhil in Economic and Social History (2000), University of Oxford. From 2012, Engh was a senior fellow at the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies (IFS) and their Centre for Asian Security Studies.
