What is African literature?
In his satirical article “How to Write About Africa?” Binyavanga Wainaina writes about the West’s expectations concerning African literature: “Always use the word ‘Africa’ or ‘Darkness’ or ‘Safari’ in your title. In your text, treat Africa as if it were one country. It is hot and dusty with rolling grasslands and huge herds of animals and tall, thin people who are starving.”
Africa consists of sixty-one countries, five time zones and more than one billion people. What is characteristic about literature from this continent? And what is an ’African writer’, really? Can we use such a term at all considering the majority of the books are written and published on other continents? With Chimamanda Adichie, Petina Gappah and Binyavanga Wainaina led by journalist Bjørn Gabrielsen.
